Engine Books
Stationary Engines for the Enthusiast
[10039]
AUD $42.00

For some reason, entirely inexplicable to me but, no doubt best known to themselves, the authors have asked me to write the foreword to this eagerly awaited book on stationary engines. It is entirely appropriate that one of the authors of this work should be David Edgington, for he is 'Mr. Stationary Engine' and has done, with the able collaboration of his wife, Doreen, more for stationary engine enthusiasts than any twenty others in the old engine movement. The magazine they started - Stationary Engine - now nearly eight years into publication, is the 'bible' of the movement and has over the years, grown, along with its editor, to be a considerable authority in its field. David has never, I am glad to say, regarded himself as a supreme arbiter, he has always sought and obtained willingly, the advice and counsel of others with specialised knowledge and talents, which, fairly neatly, sums up his co-author - Charles Hudson, who has unrivalled command of the intricacies of the small engine scene and of generating sets, as well as extensive knowledge of engines in general and particular. This book, describing in pictures and words a variety of types and styles of stationary engine, has been needed for sometime, for there is virtually nothing currently available. Thousands of enthusiasts, ranging from gentlemen of money and leisure to council roadmen, from farmers to chartered accountants, collect and exhibit obsolete engines. There is an avid audience wanting and waiting to learn more about their own particular engines, to glean more about their history and firms which made them. This book, written and illustrated by two masters of their choir and subject, should go a long way to satisfying that need and also help those members of the public who look on in awe and wonderment at the spitting, puffing and banging monsters of all sizes at the old engine rallies and wonder why and how they work - sometimes they don't! If past experience of David Edgington's and Charles Hudson's expeditions into the realms of engine lore are any guide, then this book must be that 'long felt want' of the stationary engine movement. In conclusion, I would like to say that, in my experience of stationary engine enthusiasts dating back quite a few years now, I have come to the conclusion that they are all as nutty as a fruitcake, including myself, and that they are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I am proud to have been asked to write this foreword and even prouder to have been accepted as a friend by the stationary engine movement, and especially by the authors of this book.
